Fellowship-Trained Sports Medicine Physician
A pioneer in regenerative interventional orthopedics.
Dr. Rowan Paul is a fellowship-trained sports medicine physician and board-certified family physician who treats athletes and active people of all ages, from recreational to professional. He performed his first PRP injection in 2008 and has since carried out thousands of PRP, bone marrow and adipose-derived regenerative procedures, with more than 12 years of intense study devoted to musculoskeletal ultrasound. He specializes in the knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, ankle, foot and spine.
A full partner in a prestigious San Francisco orthopedic surgery group for 10 years, he left in favor of practicing the highest level of regenerative medicine in a comprehensive, non-surgical, multidisciplinary setting — to help patients prevent the need for surgery. He is an expert in treating chronic refractory tendon problems with PRP, bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), adipose tissue transfer and dextrose prolotherapy, and in ultrasound-guided nerve blocks that help limit or eliminate opioid use. He performs TENEX and TENJET micro-invasive tendon debridement and specializes in carpal, cubital, tarsal and occipital nerve hydrodissections as a potential alternative to surgical nerve releases.
Dr. Paul serves as Head Company Physician for the San Francisco Ballet, with prior team coverage for the Oakland Athletics, World Cup speed skating, and the U.S. Olympic development Nordic ski team. He is a member of the national SAFE expert panel that published the world’s first consensus guidelines on the safe and ethical use of bone marrow aspirate concentrate, a Clinical Assistant Professor at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine, and a Castle Connolly “Top Doctor.”
